Planting Mulberries

On Saturday 25th January, a team of brave souls faced below zero temperatures to go out to clear trifoliate orange and dead brush so that 3 Mulberry trees could be planted.  This is the start of a series of projects to improve the habitat at Armand Bayou for the birds.  The team members are:  Gaye Batiz, David Crabtree, Edward Craven, Andrew Hamlett, Ken Russell, Tom Scarsella and Liz VanOrstrand.  Tom Kartrude and Mark Kramer are Staff Representatives.

This is a sight you don't see very often in Texas, a frozen sign complete with icicles.

One of the great things to see on a frosty morning are the stems of the Frost Weed plants.  The sap in the stems freezes and expands bursting the stem and creating these beautiful delicate webs of ice.  Well worth braving the cold to see.

West Bank Rookery

Our Stewardship  Staff and Volunteers have been working hard to help the birds that nest out on the island on the West Bank Rookery.  Due to the large number of birds that nested there last year (approx 350 birds), the trees have died, so to help, a frame with nesting platforms has been erected.  It is hoped to have this finished by the beginning of February when the birds start to arrive.  This is a picture of the island with the partially erected framework.

2nd Saturday Bird Count

Good Afternoon Everyone,

First off, I just want to thank you all for the great support and turnout
Saturday during our bird count; it was a very nice start for 2014 and near
record number on species for our monthly counts. We had approximately 19
people counting, this included 3 groups on the east bank, one person on the
bayou, and 2 at Bay Area Park. For purposes of counting and entering data,
we separate the entries for Armand Bayou and Bay Area Park; however, so we
know how many species we had for the day, we combine the 2 during our
count-down.

The results yielded 77 species between all areas. Highlights included 7
species of sparrow (unusual for the count were le conte's, and song),
Wilsons Snipe, red-headed woodpecker, black-necked stilt, and black skimmer
(bayou). For the full list, please see below, I have included both areas.

Next month, we plan to expand this a bit more, possibly moving to a few
additional areas of the nature center: including U&H Clear Lake, if we have
the people. If you have friends or know other birders that may be
interested, please feel free to share this with them.

Thank you again for the fun morning and I hope you all had a great time!

Next bird count is scheduled for Saturday, February 8, 2014.
